The electrical engineer Stanley Alan Sandler and nursery school teacher Judith (Levine) welcomed Adam Richard Sandler into the world on September 9, 1966, in Brooklyn, New York. He is of Jewish origin from Russia. He made his debut as a stand-up comic at the age of 17 when he unexpectedly took the stage at a Boston comedy club. He discovered he was a humorist by nature. He routinely performed in clubs and at colleges while attending New York University, where he earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in 1991.

He was cast in a recurring role as Smitty, a friend of the Huxtable family, on The Cosby Show during his first year (1984). He was “discovered” by Dennis Miller while working at a comedy club in Los Angeles. Miller suggested Sandler to producer Lorne Michaels of Saturday Night Live (1975) and told him that Sandler had a lot of ability.
