It might be disheartening to try to make it as a touring musician without the backing of a record label or a sponsor.
But every year at the Mile of Music Festival in Appleton, Wisconsin, singers, composers, and bands are reminded of why they seek inspiration.
“You go there and you’re famous for a weekend,” says Jamie Kent, a Nashville-based independent musician who has performed at Mile of Music seven times.
This is a celebration of “road dogs,” or the young artists and bands who are working hard to make it big. By the end of Mile of Music, you’ll know that you weren’t insane and that being an artist is worth every drop of labor and tear.
More than 80,000 music lovers flock to Appleton, Wisconsin (population: 75,644) every August for four days to enjoy the Mile of a Music Festival. The number has increased dramatically because of public buzz since the festival’s first year in 2013.
The Mile of the Music festival was started by Dave Willems, owner of the Gibson Music Hall in downtown Appleton. “We’ve let it expand relatively organically,” Willems explains.
