In the summer of 2018, Chad Smith will once again be touring with the Red Hot Chili Peppers.
The veteran drummer’s primary claim to fame is that he’s been with the band since 1988, but these days he’s also recognized for his striking similarity to Will Ferrell.
Even while the issue of whether the comedian and his rock star counterpart were related has been asked for quite some time, it appears to never go out of style.
Chad Smith was born to Joan and Curtis Smith on October 25, 1961, in Saint Paul, Minnesota, whereas Will Ferrell was born to Betty Kay and Roy Lee Ferrell on July 16, 1967, in Irvine, California, therefore it’s clear that the two actors are not related.
Yet this has never stopped others from drawing parallels.
For years, Chad Smith and Will Ferrell enjoyed success independently of one another, but by the 2010s, their resemblance had become a topic of conversation in Hollywood and beyond.
It wasn’t until they both made appearances on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon in 2014 wearing nearly identical ensembles that the similarities between the two began to draw attention.

An epic drum-off highlighted their long-standing enmity and helped reveal the true identity of the “imposter” drummer.
Nearly $500,000 was raised for Smith’s and Ferrell’s causes as a result of their competition.
The drum-off culminated in a surprise performance by the Red Hot Chili Peppers of the Blue Oyster Cult song (Don’t Fear) The Reaper, with Ferrell playing the cowbell in a reference to his “More Cowbell” joke from SNL.
In September of that year, Chad Smith once again donated his stick man skills to Will Ferrell’s 90 Minutes With Will Ferrell presentation, which raised money for Cancer For College.
Popularity of the Ferrell/Smith challenge resulted in a charity rematch of the legendary drum-off two years later.
In 2016, Smith and Ferrell hosted the Red Hot Benefit show, which featured performances by Californication rockers and a variety of other bands and comedians.
While Ferrell was there to raise money for Cancer for College, the drummer was there to support Flea’s Silverlake Conservatory of Music.
