The announcement follows the tragic news of the death of Queen Elizabeth II on September 8. Variety claims that an 800% increase in viewers has been recorded since the tragic news broke.

The Crown Season 5 Plot
When we left the royal family at the end of season three of The Crown, they were celebrating Christmas 1990, and while they put on a good front for the cameras, their personal lives were in shambles.
The most famous example is Prince Charles and Princess Diana, who wanted a divorce badly. Although Charles loved Camilla Parker-Bowles, he was still very much in love with Camilla at the moment, and Diana felt increasingly distant from the family.

A source for the Telegraph has speculated that Diana’s 1995 interview with Martin Bashir, in which she was allegedly “groomed” into agreeing to speak with the BBC, will also play a significant role as her relationship with Charles becomes more contentious.
Another source, however, said it was too soon to confirm or deny.
The Crown’s coverage of the Martin Bashir interview could be highly contentious. Lord Dyson conducted an investigation into the interview’s production and broadcast in 2021 and found that the BBC “fell short of the high standards of integrity and transparency which are its hallmark” (via Variety).
For his part, Prince William responded to Dyson’s investigation by saying, “This Panorama program holds no legitimacy and should never be aired again. It effectively established a false narrative which, for over a quarter of a century, has been commercialized by the BBC and others.”
Jemima Khan, a scriptwriter, producer, and friend of Princess Diana said in an interview with The Times that she had resigned from a consulting role on the show because of how Diana’s final years were being portrayed.
