However, there are a few limitations to the service: As a starting point, viewers will only be able to watch on their smartphones or tablets, not on their television sets.
The NFL’s mobile app used to offer free live streaming of regional and prime-time games. In addition, unlike similar subscription services for the NBA, NHL, and Major League Baseball, subscribers cannot watch out-of-market regular-season games.
NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell issued a statement saying, “Today marks an important day in the history of The National Football League with the launch of NFL+.”
Football fans of all ages and demographics will be able to access “the most valuable content in the mass media: live NFL games” through NFL+, according to a statement released by the NFL on Thursday.
For TV and cable networks, live sports, particularly NFL games, are the most popular programming. More than 75 percent of the top 100 most-watched telecasts last year were NFL games, according to Sports Industry Journal data.
With an eye toward the 2023 season, several companies are vying for the broadcast rights to the NFL Sunday Ticket package that shows out-of-market games, including Apple, Amazon.com, and Disney.
