George Washington Biography: the First American President

In 1732, Augustine and Mary Ball Washington gave birth to their son, George Washington, at their farm on Popes Creek in Westmoreland County, Virginia. George’s father was a prominent local landowner and county court justice.

When Augustine Washington’s first wife died in 1729, he was left with two boys and a daughter: Lawrence and Augustine Jr. All six of Augustine and Mary’s children were born to Augustine and Mary; George was the eldest.

Early Military Career

As a result of hearing stories about John Washington’s exploits as an Indian fighter and his brother Lawrence’s recollections of his time in the military, George was inspired to pursue a career in the military. Robert Dinwiddie, Lieut.

Governor of Virginia appointed George adjutant over the southern region of Virginia with a salary of £100 a year just after Lawrence’s death (November 1752). He was appointed adjutant of the Northern Neck and Eastern Shore in 1753.

Towards the end of the year, Dinwiddie found himself in need of announcing to the French that they were infringing on Crown-owned territory in the Ohio Valley. He was resolved to send Washington after sending a messenger who was unable to reach his destination.

On the 31st of October, 1753, Washington set out for the French posts. Christopher Gist, an accomplished scout, accompanied him along with a Dutchman who served as translator and guide, and two other men who had previously traded with the Indians.

Great Britain and France were theoretically at peace. Dinwiddie’s message was an ultimatum: either the French leave or they’ll be exterminated.

The voyage turned out to be difficult, dangerous, and ultimately pointless. In the middle of November, Washington’s party departed Cumberland, Maryland, and reached Fort LeBoeuf, in what is now Waterford, Pennsylvania, only 20 miles south of Lake Erie, without any delays.

Though cordial, the French commander remained unwavering in his position. It was “told me that it was their absolute Design to seize possession of Ohio, and by God, they would do it,” according to Washington’s account. The gist was sent to Washington to spread the disturbing news. He was quite fortunate to be alive. They were shot at 15 paces by an Indian, who missed.

He almost drowned as they rowed across the frozen Allegheny River on an outrigger canoe, but he was saved by a wood that he grabbed hold of. He was almost frozen to death that night in his dripping clothes.

On January 16, 1754, he arrived at Williamsburg, Virginia, where he hurriedly wrote a chronicle of the expedition. As part of Dinwiddie’s efforts to persuade the crown of the gravity of the French danger, he had the document printed and transported to London where it was reproduced three times.
