Michael Joe Jackson, the fifth of Joe and Katherine Jackson’s nine children, was born on August 29, 1958, in Gary, Indiana. There was constantly music playing in the home. The children of Jackson’s mother sang along with them as their mother taught them traditional and religious songs.

On the set of The Wiz, producer Quincy Jones (1933–) got to know Michael Jackson. In 1979, they collaborated on Michael Jackson’s platinum-selling album Off the Wall. Jackson and Jones collaborated on the Thriller album again in 1982.

The album’s big singles, “Beat It,” “Billie Jean,” and “Thriller,” cemented Jackson’s status as a prominent pop singer in the early 1980s.
