If you keep seeing Michelle Branch’s face, it’s probably because you heard about her nasty divorce from Patrick Carney, drummer for the Black Keys.
However, the songwriter has returned with new music designed to protect romantic partnerships from harm. The branch opened up about the turmoil in her personal life over the past few weeks in an interview with Billboard published on Tuesday.
The two talked about Branch’s upcoming fourth studio album, The Trouble With Fever, which she produced and recorded at her home studio with Carney. Branch has indicated that taking the new music on the road will “be like an emotional exorcism.”
For her, the most important thing has been keeping her attention on the new album and tour “just the most excellent diversionary tactic ever. If I didn’t have this record coming out, I’d definitely spend the day in bed sobbing.”
Earlier this month, Branch, 39, made news when she tweeted and then deleted a note in which she accused Carney, 42, of cheating on her when she was at home with their 6-month-old baby.
Then, in a statement to PEOPLE, she revealed that she and Carey were divorcing after only three years of marriage “Totally devastated doesn’t even begin to cover how I feel for myself and my loved ones.
Things have been completely yanked out from under me, and I need to find out what to do next.”
According to the police report, Branch was arrested the same day after admitting to slapping Carney during a domestic disagreement. Branch then filed for divorce, and two weeks later, at the state’s urging, the domestic assault case was dropped.
Branch told Billboard that her recent struggles may serve as inspiration for future songs. She said, “Right now, I have a lot of s—- I want to write about.” Her relationship with Carney may have soured, but she remembers recording The Trouble With Fever as “truly a great period for me.”
However, after spending so much time during the pandemic in “mom mode” and “wife mode,” Branch is eager to, well, branch out.
As corny as it may sound, she expressed excitement about becoming economically independent and reestablishing her sense of herself.
“In the past, I’ve switched between being a mom and a wife. I feel like I’ve been out of Michelle Branch mode for a long. And I think that will be very helpful, therapeutic, and enjoyable.”
