Is Nicolas Cage Elevating A Cliched Western Remake?
In this cliched western remake, a weary frontier shopkeeper is forced to relive his days as an outlaw gunman in order to get revenge on those who killed his wife. The key to the strategy is in the title; everything about the film, from the premise (variations of this story have been told before, most recently in the excellent Old Henry), to the large, expansive Alfred Newman-inspired score, to the widescreen wild west scenery, has tired predictability.

The film is worth seeing for two reasons: first, Nicolas Cage is ruthlessly merciless as Colton Briggs, a guy who has already committed all of his life’s murders. The other is Ryan Kiera Armstrong, who portrays Brooke, his 12-year-old daughter, who is a prodigy. Colton and Brooke both have trouble eliciting “typical” emotional reactions. There is an intriguing deleted scene from Iron Man in which Nick Fury addresses Spider-Man, the Hulk, and mutants since there was a chance the MCU might include them right away. Ghost Rider, though, was never counted among them. Any speculation that other Marvel characters from non-MCU films might make a comeback is due to Spider-Man: No Way Home’s merger of both Tobey Maguire’s and Andrew Garfield’s Spider-Men.
Patrick Stewart returned to the role of Professor X in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, but in a distinct universe than Fox’s X-Men Universe. When Ryan Reynolds’ Deadpool and Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine cross over in Deadpool 3, their stories will be partially incorporated into the MCU.
