On February 26, 1985, Sonya Richards-Ross entered the world in Kingston, Jamaica. Sharon and Archie Richards welcomed their daughter into the world. Sonya began running when she was seven, and she competed for her school in the yearly youth championships. When she was 12 years old, her family uprooted to Fort Lauderdale, Florida. Their goal in relocating to Florida was for her to be recruited by an American university for a sports scholarship.
Ross received his diploma from St. Thomas Aquinas in 2002. She’s been named the top high school female track and field athlete in the country by Gatorade. She enrolled at UT Austin in 2002. After a year, in 2009, she won the U.S. 400-meter title in 50.05 seconds, which qualified her for the World Championships in Berlin. At the Berlin Olympics, she also took home the gold in the 400-meter dash. With a time of 50.79 seconds, she won the 2012 Istanbul 400-meter race decisively.
Richards-Ross has been a vocal critic of the IOC’s contentious Rule 40 during the whole Olympic season.
