Sofi Stadium Concert: Saturday Night Was a Night Full of Nostalgia

In the 1980s, I packed my luggage full of skintight spandex leggings, torn fishnet tank tops, and extra-large glam metal aspirations of becoming the next Bret Michaels, Vince Neil, or Joe Elliott in sunny Southern California.

On Saturday, SoFi Stadium in Inglewood hosted the Stadium Tour, which featured Mötley Crüe, Def Leppard, Poison, Joan Jett & the Blackhearts, and Classless Act.

The concert was a bittersweet trip down memory lane, full of could-have-been-me flashback fantasies and when-rock-was-real overwrought hand-wringing.

It was evident that I was not the only one who yearned for simpler times. Fans standing in line at SoFi Stadium on AARP night discussed their impending grandparenthood with one another.

The enormous hair of the ’80s was replaced with greying locks, and those who insisted on donning skintight clothes showed their age in all the wrong places. All the bands looked the part, too, rocking the glam metal uniform of leather, rhinestones, and tattoos.

This summer’s tour, which was performed in baseball and football stadiums, attracted fans of all ages, including father-son, mother-daughter, and father-daughter duos who were often seen taking photographs together.

The performance by Mötley Crüe on this night was particularly bad. The two main attractions were quite different. Rock ‘n’ roll legends Def Leppard put on a show for the ages, while Mötley Crüe demonstrated why they belong in a retirement community. Meanwhile, Joan Jett was a legend, Poison was rocking, and the opening act, Classless Act, was on the rise.

Looking Back, Looking Forward

While Mötley Crüe left me feeling underwhelmed, Def Leppard and Poison reminded me of why I used to adore the music that some people believe sounded the death knell for rock and roll. The Blackhearts sent me on a nostalgic, bubblegum-flavored trip, while Classless Act gave me faith in the future of rock and roll.
