Many series may have completed their scripts in time to film/air despite the WGA’s writer’s strike, while others either didn’t finish and must cancel or did finish, and…their showrunners are making a point.
Netflix’s crown jewel, Stranger Things, will delay season 5 due to the writer’s strike, while HBO’s House of the Dragon has a screenplay ready to go, as Forbes.com reports say. The Duffer brothers have opted to halt shooting despite the seeming completion of the original screenplays. They have made this decision because they recognize that the writing process does not cease once filming has begun.
“Duffers here. Writing does not stop when filming begins. While we’re excited to start production with our amazing cast and crew, it is impossible during this strike. We hope a fair deal is reached soon so we can all return to work. Until then — over and out. #wgastrong”

One of the fundamental aspects of the strike terms is expressed here. A major shift brought on by the rise of streaming services is that writers no longer spend months or even years on a single program, often without visiting the set during production for rewrites and other similar purposes. Once the writers have spent 10 weeks on a script, they hand it in, and the production moves on without them.
The Duffer brothers appear to be “old school” in their recognition that it takes more than just a “final draft” script to shoot, as adjustments may be necessary along the way, which is one of the tidal shifts in the industry that cuts writers out of the process. This calls for…writers. Artists presently on strike include writers.
Fans of Stranger Things are used to waiting significant periods between seasons, so a delay wouldn’t be shocking because of COVID shutdowns and the time it takes to produce each season; over three years passed between seasons three and four of the program. There was never an official premiere date for Season 5, but we can probably expect it around.

The middle of 2024, two years after Season 4. But if the writer’s strike causes further delays, it could not happen until the end of 2024. Hollywood and these streaming services will feel the effects of this strike more and more as time goes on.
It may not seem like much now, but a drought is on the horizon, and many of them are confident that they have a “backlog” of material to fill space for a while. Unfortunately, Stranger Things is only one of many series that won’t be returning for quite some time.
