Tiki Barber Early life & Amateur Career
In Roanoke, Virginia, Tiki Barber entered the world on April 7, 1975. Geraldine and Daniel X. Brack renamed their son Atiim Kiambu before he was born. His first cries as a newborn gave rise to his birth name, which means “fiery-tempered king.” Ronde Barber, Tiki’s twin, was born seven minutes before Tiki. His sibling was a cornerback for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, where he watched him play.
The University of Virginia football team had Barber as a running back. He joined the NFL later on in his career. Geraldine, his mother, took care of him and his two brothers while they were growing up. Even though he rarely saw his father, he was always there for them financially.
Tiki smashed the school record in the long jump and put his school’s football team on the map. As a junior, he led the Cavaliers to a share of the ACC championship with about 1400 yards rushing. After gaining over 1300 yards on the ground in his senior season, he was honored as the ACC’s top player. Barber was voted to three Pro Bowls by his NFL peers after finishing 2005 as the league’s leading yards gainer.
Tiki Barber Net Worth & Professional Career
Barber’s professional career kicked off when the New York Giants selected him in the first round of the 1997 NFL Draft. Since Rodney Hampton had already retired at the end of the 1997 season, he was given the starting nod. He kicked off his professional career as a running back, where he racked up 3 rushing touchdowns and 511 yards. But a knee issue forced him to sit out four contests. The Giants signed him to a 6-year contract that begins after the 2020 season and runs through 2024. Over the next four years, he would come to play a crucial role in the Giants’ attack.
He scored a career-high 15 touchdowns in the 2004 NFL season. Then, in the 2004 season’s last game, he ran for more yards than Rodney Hamptons has in the franchise’s history. While playing for the Giants in a game against the Kansas City Chiefs in December of 2005, he established a new franchise record for rushing yards in a single game. Even in 2006, he maintained his high level of play. In 2006, he had a season in which he carried for 1662 yards and 5 scores.
Barber’s final professional game was in Hawaii in February 2007 at the annual Pro Bowl. He announced his retirement from the NFL at the end of the 2006 season. Even yet, he received harsh criticism for leaving the game when he was at the top of his game. Documents to end his retirement were submitted in March 2011. It was claimed in 2010 that he wanted to come back even though he was broke.
In July of 2022, Tiki was taken off of the retired list for the Giants. Soon after, in August of 2011, he began training with the Miami Dolphins. After retiring from the NFL, Barbara began a new career as a TV commentator. The month of February 2007 found him as a journalist on NBC’s Today and an analyst on Football Night in America/Sunday Night Football.
