Waterfront Concert and Festival: The Event is The Largest Free Community Concert in The State

This Saturday marks the start of the 2022-2023 season for the Oregon Symphony, and it all begins with the return of the Waterfront Concert and Festival to Tom McCall Waterfront Park.

Oregon Symphony President Scott Showalter is calling on residents to attend the state’s largest free community concert.

Showalter proclaimed that the “Waterfront Concert and Festival is a summer musical institution for all Oregonians.”

People from all walks of life will be able to come together to celebrate the beauty and power of a live Oregon Symphony concert while listening to an exceptional assortment of local performers from a variety of backgrounds.

Portland Taiko, a traditional Japanese drumming group, the MYSfits jazz band, blues, and gospel singer LaRhonda Steele, and singers Alonzo Chadwick and Soulful will all be performing at the 1 p.m. performance.

Jan Michael Looking Wolf, an indigenous Oregonian and tribal member of the Kalapuya, will collaborate with indigenous flutists and the Orquestra Pacifico Tropical to present music from Central and South America.

At 7 o’clock, the Oregon Symphony will perform a wide range of music, from film scores by composers like John Williams (“Flying Theme” from “E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial) to classical pieces by composers like Mozart, Brahms, and Tchaikovsky.

Also performing with the orchestra will be soprano Vanessa Isiguen of the Portland Opera and tenor Tony Kalil of the Oregon Symphony performing “O Soave fanciulla” from Puccini’s La Bohème.

Presently, no COVID-19 outdoor event restrictions exist on either the state or local level. Masks, immunization certificates, and results of negative COVID tests will no longer be necessities.

According to the Oregon Symphony’s permit with the City of Portland, alcoholic beverages will not be permitted at Tom McCall Waterfront Park during the event.
