Jeremy Lin Early Life and College Career
Born in Torrance, California in 1988, Jeremy Lin spent his formative years in Palo Alto and the surrounding Bay Area. Shirley and Genie-ming, natives of Taiwan, immigrated to the United States in the ’70s, residing in Virginia before moving on to Indiana for higher education.
Lin’s brothers are Josh (the older one) and Joseph (the younger one). Their dad taught them the game at the local YMCA, and Lin even participated in a National Junior Basketball League his mom had a hand in creating.
Lin led his Palo Alto High School basketball team to a 32-1 record and the CIF Division II state championship as a senior. He was so outstanding that he was named to the All-State first team and the Division II Player of the Year for Northern California.
Lin had hoped to study at the nearby Stanford University on a scholarship, but he was denied admission. Instead, he enrolled in Harvard and, as a sophomore, was recognized on the All-Ivy League Second Team.
Lin was the only player in his conference by his junior year to be ranked in the top ten of his conference in scoring, assists, and steals among other categories in the NCAA Division I men’s basketball rankings. Therefore, he was selected to the All-Ivy League First Team by virtually every media outlet.
As a senior, he was once again chosen without opposition. As a result of his 30-point performance against the Connecticut Huskies, Lin gained widespread media notice. He graduated as the first player in Ivy League history with 1,450 points and 450 rebounds in his college career.
