Wayne’s Blue Note biography states that he began playing the clarinet at age 16 and picked up the tenor and saxophone in college. In 1952, he graduated from New York University with a degree in music education. Throughout his career, which began in the late ’50s and ended in the early ’80s, Wayne collaborated with a wide range of jazz performers and ensembles.
After playing in Miles Davis’ Second Great Quintet, he and Joe Zawinul formed the band Weather Report. A Grammy was presented to Wayne for the first time in 1973, and he won again in 2022. In the late ’90s and early ’00s, Wayne collaborated with a number of rock ‘n’ roll groups, including Carlos Santana and the Rolling Stones, in addition to his work with jazz performers.
Along with David Bowie, he was awarded an honorary doctorate by the Berklee College of Music in 1999 and by New York University in 2010. Wayne received a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Recording Academy in 2015.
