‘I’m Glad to be Mexican, That’s All My Tattoo Means,’ Says Cain Velasquez
Since his UFC debut, heavyweight contender Cain Velasquez has had some confusion over his name. The difficulty stems from the “Brown Pride” tattoo on his chest. Everyone has wanted to know more about that special meaning the heavyweight champion placed on his body art.
For the first time, Velasquez describes how the tattoo came to be, what it means to him, and how he plans on responding to some of the accusations surrounding it in a rare interview. The closer Cain gets to UFC 121, the more he’ll have to defend his tattoo as he prepares for his title shot against Brock Lesnar. Considering its “controversial” nature, what do you think of his inked body part? Is the criticism of the tat excessive, or is the tat excessive?
Cain Velasquez Career
After finishing college, Velasquez enrolled in the American Kickboxing Academy. The first-round TKO of esse Fujarczyk in October 2006 marked his MMA debut. The next opponent Velasquez faced was the previously unbeaten Jeremiah Constant, who Velasquez stopped in the first round via technical knockout.
At UFC 83 in April 2008, he made his professional MMA debut against Brad Morris. With a first-round TKO, he claimed victory. In July 2008, he faced off against Jake O’Brien at UFC Fight Night 14. This bout was again won by Velasquez through first-round TKO.
He beat Denis Stojnic, Cheick Kongo, Ben Rothwell, and Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira in the first round as well. This time around, Brock Lesnar will be Velasquez’s opponent in the UFC Heavyweight Championship. To make matters worse, during the fight, he ripped his rotator cuff open. While Velasquez was taken away for surgery, he knocked out Lesnar with a TKO in the first round.
Having healed from the injury to his shoulder, Velasquez fought for the second time against Junior dos Santos in late 2011. Velasquez was knocked out by dos Santos less than a minute into the first round of this fight. Before having a rematch with dos Santos, Velasquez had knocked out Antonio Silva in the first round.
When Velasquez lost to Fabricio Werdum and Francis Ngannou in 2015 and 2019, his career took a turn for the worse. Velasquez announced his retirement from MMA in October 2019.
