Season six of This Is Us will bring more tragedy and heartbreak to the Pearson family’s saga that spans three generations.
When it comes to love and life, The Big Three – Justin Hartley, Chrissy Metz, and Sterling K Brown – have had a rough go of it. Their common experiences, as well as their individual scars, have played a significant role in shaping who they are now.
As the condition of their mother, Rebecca (Mandy Moore) worsens, and as a result of the show’s reputation as a tearjerker, it’s safe to say that the last episode of This Is Us will leave viewers desperate for tissues.
We’ve got some bad news for you: This Is Us is coming to an end after these episodes, and by all accounts, there is little to no prospect of the show returning.
To this day, the show has received high praise for its candid portrayal of family sorrow, small moments of joy, and what it means to be a family when everyone is on various routes in life.
In the five years after it premiered, it has garnered no fewer than 238 nominations and awards, cementing the cast’s place on the A-list.
However, after much conjecture, it was confirmed in May 2021 that the upcoming episodes would be the show’s final ones. Fogelman had long predicted that this would be the show’s endpoint, allowing him to tell the whole story he wanted to as the show swings back and forth between time periods.
“We’re quite far off,” remarked Fogelman during the 2018 For Your Consideration event.
It’s all been laid out for us, and we know exactly where we’re going. We didn’t want to get stranded, so we always had a strategy in place.
“We have a narrative to tell, and we want to tell it in the best possible way.”
I hope that when we get to our end, people feel like they have watched something completely because that’s really how we’re trying to arrange it,” showrunner Isaac Aptaker said in an interview with Deadline the following year.
This is something we’ve planned for a long time, so we’re able to plan for it and attempt to make it feel complete, rather than a series that will go on forever.”
Nevertheless, there was hope that the show could have lasted longer because it incorporated current events into its storylines. Coronavirus, of course, was a major issue in season five, and work was halted for several months as a result.
“Hard to believe that our final season starts tonight,” tweeted Fogelman on Twitter before its premiere on January 4th, 2022. We’ve invested a lot of time and energy into making sure this story ends on a high note.
“Thank you for sticking with us thus far. It’s been an incredible experience. There’s still a lot more to the story. “You’ll obtain all the answers you’re looking for.”
“I knew what the ending of this season was going to be from the moment we put pen to paper, not just at the beginning of this season, but [while working on] previous seasons, in terms of Chrissy and what happens, and what the big reveal is at the end of the season,” he explained to Deadline ahead of the launch of season 6.
As a result, when you have that type of faith in the people you’re working with—actors and writers as well as directors and crew—and you also stick to the plan, it gives you a kind of fake confidence that eventually changes into true confidence.”
With the end of This Is Us likely to be the ultimate goodbye to all of the beloved characters from the Pearson family, he also ruled out any possibility of a spin-off.
“The stories of these characters are told once you’ve watched the end of season 6,” he said to Variety. Since you already know so much, there isn’t really a spin-off.”
Do you have any further ideas for the show?
It’s possible, but I don’t believe it. For the time being, I don’t see myself returning to this project.
So prepare yourself for a few months of tears as we bid farewell to our family for good.
The final season of This Is Us airs on NBC on Tuesdays at 9/8c and can be viewed on Hulu. Amazon Prime Video and Disney+ subscribers in the United Kingdom may catch the show on Thursdays.
