Sicario 3: Release Date Status, Cast, Plot and Everything Else We Know!

Shockingly, Denis Villeneuve’s smash hit Sicario has spawned two sequels, one of which has yet to be released. After being recruited by a government task force to assist in a deteriorating drug war on the U.S.-Mexico border, an idealistic FBI agent (the strikingly attractive Emily Blunt) finds herself caught up in the escalating conflict. The film’s hard-hitting 2018 sequel, Sicario: Day of the Soldado, continues to follow the drug war on the border, which has escalated as the cartels have begun trafficking terrorists across the U.S. border. To fight the war, federal agent Matt Graver (Josh Brolin) re-teams with the secretive Alejandro (Benicio del Toro) (Benicio del Toro). Will they reunite again for the third installment?

The first film enjoyed both favorable reviews and success at the box office while landing three Academy Award nominations. In general, critics had a more negative reaction to the sequel, but it didn’t perform poorly at the box office. The third project, which would complete what producers have called an “anthology trilogy,” is still a go.

Producer Trent Luckinbill told Screen Rant, “We were overjoyed with the response to the first one, and we felt justified in making a second one because we loved it. “There is no doubt that we are the film’s most ardent supporters. And we feel that way again. We leave a little more of a teaser at the end of this one than we did with the first. Yeah. Of course, we’d love to see it; this was something Taylor had always hoped to see, and we thought it would be fantastic if we could make it there. That’s what I’m thinking we should do right now. The second one, in my opinion, exceeded my expectations.”

There has been speculation about who will return for Sicario Capos – the third film’s reported title – both behind and in front of the camera. Here’s a closer look at everything we know so far.

Updated February 2022: If you’re looking for more details about the third installment, you’ll be happy to know that we’ve updated this article with more details.

Anticipated Release Date

Sicario: Capos is produced by Black Label Media, which has confirmed that the movie should enter production this year. Therefore, it’s possible we won’t see a finished product until the end of 2022 at the earliest. Because of the mixed reception to the second instalment, the studio may be extra cautious when putting together the next instalment.

Which Cast Members Are Returning?

At this time, no definitive casting for Sicario 3 has been revealed, but producer Molly Smith has confirmed with Deadline that Black Label intends to get del Toro back to appear. It’s expected that Brolin and Fargo Season 2’s Jeffrey Donovan (Burn Notice) will both return for a third film, but again, nothing has been confirmed at this time.

It feels like Blunt’s hero character is a must for a trilogy capper too, and an exploration of how she evolved following the traumatic events of the original film could be great for the new flick. The absence of Blunt was felt strongly in Day of the Soldado, and the film is generally seen as less interesting narratively than the original. Reports say that the series’ producers are interested in bringing Blunt back to the world of Sicario, but it’s hard to say, given her busy schedule.

Who Will Direct The Third Film?

Could Villeneuve return to the director’s chair for Sicario 3? Ed McDonnell, Villeneuve’s producer, says the actor would be open to returning. “[Villeneuve] wishes he had been available [for Sicario 2],” said McDonnell to Empire. “We even contemplated having him return for the third time, should one occur. He said, ‘If I were available, I’d be directing this movie tomorrow.’ As soon as the script for Blade Runner began to take shape, we knew he would be a central character.”

Stefano Sollima, who directed Sicario 2 in 2018, said he would not return to the franchise for a third film back in 2018. He explained to Variety at the time that “each movie in these series needs to be standalone that stays in the same world.” “I’d be interested in seeing more of Sicario, but it should be directed by someone with a distinct vision. A director should not be allowed to direct more than one film at a time. Then it would resemble a real-life franchise too closely.”

What’s The Plot Of The Third Installment?

Ahead of the release of Day Of The Soldado, producer Trent Luckinbill confirmed a third Sicario was definitely in the works. The story would likely pick up from the Sicario 2 ending, which saw Alejandro (del Toro) survive a gunshot by young gang member Miguel (played by Elijah Rodriguez}, who was forced to shoot him. The final scene takes place a year later, where the recovered Alejandro seemingly recruits Miguel, setting up a potential apprentice relationship in the next movie.

As Matt (Brolin) disobeyed his superiors’ strict orders in Sicario 2 due to an emotional outburst, a sequel would have to address the consequences for Matt’s career. Matt and Alejandro may meet the toughest drug lords yet if the title Sicario: Capos means “bosses” in English.
