On April 19, according to Jacki Kelley of the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office, Alexa Bartell d!ed after pebbles struck her car and many others. At least seven cars, according to official estimates, were damaged by large landscaping pebbles.
Joseph Koenig, Nicholas Karol-Chik, and Zachary Kwak, all aged 18, were arr*sted on Tuesday, April 25, 2023, on suspicion of first-degree mu*der and extreme disregard, according to the sheriff’s office. They are in ja!l without the option of posting bail.
The first court hearing for the téénagers was on April 27, 2023, a Thursday. After photographing Bartell’s automobile, Koenig and Karol-Chik joked about being “bl00d brothers” and agreed they would never bring up the incident again.
The accused appeared in Jefferson County Court before Judge Mark M. Randall of the First Judicial District. They did not enter pleas and are scheduled to make their next court appearance on May 3. Karol-Chik allegedly told investigators he had a little bit of guilt in him after seeing the victim’s automobile.
After hitting Bartell’s automobile, Kwak is accused by Karol-Chik of saying, “We have to go back and see that,” according to a police report. After reversing, Koenig allegedly slowed down for Kwak to snap a photo of the car, as recounted by Karol-Chik.
Kwak informed law enforcement that he committed the crime because he believed “Joseph or Mitch would want it as a memento.” According to the sources, Karol-Chik reportedly told the cops that the accused got a thrill from pelting the automobiles with rocks.
Koenig and Kwak got together the day after Bartell was k!lled to try to straighten up their versions of events and disclaim any responsibility for the mu*der. Bartell was talking to a friend on the phone the night she was mu*dered when the conversation was abruptly cut off.
Using the Find My iPhone app, Bartell’s friend tracked down Bartell’s phone, which she had left in a field south of Colorado State Highway 128 in Golden. Bartell was found by his companion sitting still and bleeding heavily in the driver’s seat of a Chevrolet Spark.

Bartell’s pal phoned his mom before dialing 911. A puddle of bl00d was found on the victim’s lap, and there was “bl00d all over” the inside of the driver’s side door when police arrived. She was pronounced de@d on the spot.
On the evening of April 19, after hanging out for a while, the three suspects began removing landscaping pebbles from the border of a parking lot and placing them in the back of a vehicle.
Karol-Chik told police that he and Kwak used to collect pebbles and throw them at p@ssing vehicles. Karol-Chik and Koenig have been accused of being involved in at least 10 incidents of item throwing dating back to at least the month of February.
