Rhodes, 57, and Meggs, 53, were found gu!lty of obstructing an official proceeding and interfering with papers or proceedings on 6 January 2021, in one of the most high-profile trials relating to the incident.
Rhodes displayed little contrition during a hearing on Thursday, saying he was a “political prisoner” and that the Oath Keepers were fighting those “who are destroying our country.”
This was shot down by Judge Amit Mehta, who also voiced alarm over Rhodes’ violent statements, which included a threat to hang former US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi.
“I dare say, Mr. Rhodes, and I’ve never said this about anyone who I’ve sentenced: You, sir, present an ongoing threat and peril to this country, to the republic, and the very fabric of our democracy,” the judge said.
“We all now hold our collective breaths with an election approaching,” he said. “Will we have another January 6th? That remains to be seen.”
The punishment handed down to Rhodes was the longest for the incident, in which thousands of Trump supporters rushed the US Capitol to protest the outcome of the 2020 presidential election. The state’s requested sentences for Rhodes and Meggs were 25 and 21 years, respectively.
The defense team had requested sentences of less than three years for their clients. Two more Oath Keepers who joined the brawl inside the Capitol were convicted and sentenced to pr!son on Friday. Kenneth Harrelson received a four-year sentence, while Jessica Watkins was sentenced to eight and a half years.
